In a Netflix documentary, golfer Joel Dahmen opened up about his battle with cancer and the death of his mother.
The Full Swing series released by the streaming giant has given sports fans a glimpse into the private lives of several golfers.
The show is a look at a few big names who are fighting for their sport and success in the midst of the LIV controversy.
Episode four gave a fascinating glimpse into Dahmen’s humble and self-deprecating lifestyle.
The actor does not consider himself a great golfer, and says at one point that “someone has to be the 70th best golfer in the World.” It could as well be me.”
The fans were also informed about the numerous hurdles that he had to overcome.
Dahmen, an American junior Golf star from Washington, showed such potential that he received a scholarship.
Dahmen’s mom was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer six months before he left for college.
Full Swing reported that the golfer, who was devastated by his wife’s actions, said: “She did all for me.” I never made my bed, I never did laundry. “I was so spoilt by her.”
Dahmen recalled his struggles following her death, and referred to himself as a “leaf on the wind” without direction.
In 2010, he returned to the track and became a professional, but was then diagnosed with testicular carcinoma a year later.
Dahmen has now turned 35 and has reflected on the impact of that difficult period in his life.
He said, “I believe that my cancer has probably improved my life.”
To not take life as granted, do your best and all the right things. “Maybe a blessing disguised.”
Dahmen still tries to make his mark in golf but nearly went all the way at the US Open last year.
The star, who was the surprise leader in round two, could not catch up to eventual winner Matt Fitzpatrick .
He is currently ranked 58th on the world rankings and has won one PGA Tour tournament.
